Q - Do you really live in the house on the letterhead?
A- No
Q - Then What Is Soundcrest House
A - Before we moved to Pennsylvania, we lived in a section of NYC knw as College Point. In its heyday, College Point was a resort for those who wished to travel from Manhattan for a vacation. After all, in the early 1900's Queens County was indeed like the country. On the surveyors map of the property the house was called Sound Crest as it was on the crest of the Long Island Sound. We decided to use that as the name of the business. Our house was built in 1905 or so and eventually found its way into the Kempenski family. Leo Kempenski was a WWII bandleader / composer who actually recorded a few songs in the living room of the house. He also wrote a lot of 1940's church music. Leo died in 1960 and the house became way too much for his widow to take care of. It became an eyesore and was sold to us. We put a lot of time into it restoring it as best we could. The house had not been painted etc on the inside since the early 50's. When we bought it in 1979, even the home inspector was surprised that we wanted it. We left in 1993, for the usual "quality of life" reasons - less crime and better schools.
